Jump Strategy

My learning intention was jump strategy.
My activity was worksheet.
It was hard because I don't know some of the subtraction very well.

I am a beach
I am a Beach
People can swim in me,
they can splash me
on to friends.
People have fun when
they are swimming in me.
The waves can push the
water away and people.
When people come to the beach
they bring balls to play on me.
People kayak on me with a
a huge splash.
The sun shines on me and makes me hot
so people will come and play in me

Akansha @ Panmure Bridge School: Maths
Our focus this unit has been on place value.
This is the game I played to work on my place values.
It's called happy hippo half.
I need to know how to half the numbers. For each half they have to put a counter on the matching number on their happy hippo half.

Time for Breakfast 2
L.I. - Look at the statements used in this ad
Can they be substantiated?
Find out some of the timeframes for you and your life
Investigating example
Our question:
How long does the average person spend in the shower in their lifetime?
What we need to find out or estimate:
What is the length of an average lifetime?
What is the length of an average shower?
Our plan:
We know the average lifetime is 79 years because we found that information on the Statistics New Zealand
website.
To work out the length of an average shower we are all going to time ourselves and other members of our family in the shower and then use these times to calculate an average time.
Person
|
Time in shower
|
Jack
|
8 minutes
|
Jack’s mum
|
3 minutes
|
Andrew
|
15 minutes
|
Andrew’s dad
|
5 minutes
|
Andrew’s brother
|
6 minutes
|
Sarah
|
12 minutes
|
Sarah’s sister
|
8 minutes
|
8 + 3 + 15 + 6 + 5 + 12 + 8 = 57
57 ÷ 7 = 8.1, 8 minutes
We asked our families and most people have a shower every day, but some people have more than one a day
and some people have less than one a day so we are assuming the average person has one shower a day.
In 79 years there are 79 x 356 days = 28 124 days.
28 124 days x 8 minutes = 224 993 minutes
224 993 minutes ÷ 60 minutes in an hour = 3 749 hours
3 749 hours ÷ 24 hours in a day = 156 days
156 days ÷ 30 days in an average month = 5.2 months
Our conclusion:
The average person spends just over 5 months of their life in the shower.
Think about:
How did they work out their average time spent doing the activity?
Work out the average number, time how many years people usually live for by how many days in a year. Take the answer, time it by the average number and take the answer and divide it by 60. Take that answer, divide that by 24, and then the answer to that divide by 30 is how many months they spend in the shower/ bath.
What maths knowledge and strategies did they use?
Times, divide, plus, the average number.
What is the formula for working out an average?
By adding their time together and divide by the number of people.
